- How to teach listening skills effectively Listening is one of the BIGGEST problems for English students. It’s possible for them to: • read well • have good grammar & vocabulary skills • be able to speak and write but when they listen to spoken English, they don’t understand everything.
- How to teach listening skills effectively So Why Is Listening So Difficult? There are three main reasons.
- How to teach listening skills effectively 1. The written form of English words is very different from their pronunciation. There are many silent letters, like in the words comb, sign, knock, half, muscle, guard, and wrist. And many letter combinations can have completely different pronunciations: This means that if our students normally study English with their EYES (reading), they often won’t recognize words when they hear them with their EARS (listening).
- How to teach listening skills effectively 2 – Native speakers talk fast and “connect” words together v In audio samples for English listening practice, they pronounce each word slowly and carefully – but in real life, native speakers don’t do this. Instead, they “connect ” words so that two or more words sound like one! v This means that listening to “slow English” audio is helpful but it is NOT enough. v To be fluent in English, students MUST get used to hearing fast spoken English
- How to teach listening skills effectively 3 – Lack of opportunity to practice listening ü Some English teachers claim that students can learn English completely naturally just by listening. ü But there are two major problems with “just listening more.” ü First of all, if they only partially understand what they’re hearing, it’s easy to get frustrated and stop trying – and then they won’t make progress. ü Second, “just listening” is OK – it’s better than nothing – but if they’re not doing exercises while they listen, then they won’t get the full benefit of improving their comprehension and their vocabulary.
- SO that’s WHY listening is difficult, and here is how to help students improve it THERETHERE AREARE TWOTWO WAYS:WAYS: • encouraging students to listen every day • helping them practice the right way
- listen every day o Create the habit of listening to English for 15 minutes daily. o Listen while doing the housework or exercising. o 3 sites with audio / text: ü VOA Special English ü BBC Six-minute English ü Elllo.org
- practice the right way § Relax and know that it’s completely normal to have limited understanding the first time we listen. § Listen the first time for the general topics. Don’t try to understand every word, just try to understand the main ideas. § Listen again and try to understand some more specific details. § Listen the third time and we can pay attention to the individual words. Ø Listening from more general to more specific is the most effective way to practice and improve English listening ability

- Tips to teach listening skills 1. Be a Model Once you have established rooms for the class, be sure to model them yourself. Regardless of what expectations are set, if you are not following them your students won’t either. Be sure to respect your students and model good listening in the following ways.
- Tips to teach listening skills 2. Body language Make eye contact with your students while they are speaking. Don’t cross your arms across your chest which is a defensive stance. Nodding occasionally can show that you are listening, while smiling will show support or encouragement.
- Tips to teach listening skills 3. Don’t interrupt Nothing is quite as frustrating as being interrupted. You don’t want your students to interrupt you, so show them the same courtesy. Wait until students are finished speaking before commenting, and make sure you prevent other students from interrupting too. Nothing can knock a student’s confidence like being interrupted by their trainer, so it’s a good idea to let everyone have their chance to speak, as long as it’s at appropriate parts in the training.
- Tips to teach listening skills 4. Don’t jump to conclusions It is tempting to predict what the speaker is saying instead of actually listening, but don’t do it. Listen without making assumptions so you don’t miss anything that is being said. This way if one of your students raises a point you hadn’t considered, you will be able to participate in the discussion, and give an informed answer, instead of missing the point they were actually talking about.
- Tips to teach listening skills 5. Make the Connection to Comprehension Being a good listener is one thing, but actually comprehending is another. Listening must lead to understanding in order for learning to take place. Encourage your students to use other strategies such as taking notes, rephrasing, participating in group discussions afterwards, and asking clarifying questions while they listen. This will help them absorb and understand what they are hearing. It is your job to help students make necessary connections so you’ll need to listen to them in order to gauge their level of understanding.
